Today’s SummerSlam edition of the WWE Daily News Round-Up features John Cena’s reaction to missing out on SummerSlam, The Miz talking about the WWE Championship, and Finn Balor’s surprising comments on Roman Reigns.
Let’s take a look at this SummerSlam special WWE Daily News Round-Up.
#1 Jeff Hardy opens up about his injuries
Jeff Hardy, who lost to Shinsuke Nakamura at SummerSlam, opened up about the incredible injuries that he has faced over the years, prior to his SummerSlam match.
Speaking to The Whig, Jeff revealed which move he’s used judiciously and kept for only some events. Hardy said, “I’m 40 now and I’ve been pretty banged up lately. Four nights a week is a lot of matches — I mean they add up. And doing that Swanton [Bomb, his finisher] every night is just rough. I’ve actually cut that out of a lot of events and I’ve just been using the Twist of Fate as a finish and it’s helped my lower back out a lot. I pretty much now save the Swanton for television unless I’m feeling really good at a live event.”
Hardy revealed the extent of his injuries but said that he feels good wrestling right now: “I’m a little beat up, but my back is a lot better than it was a few weeks ago. I’ve been having this issue with my elbow, like a nerve issue, and my hand was asleep for probably seven weeks and it’s finally woken. But overall, I mean, I’m 40 years old, I feel pretty good to be wrestling the way I am today in 2018.”
In the same interview, Jeff said that he would like to be the WWE Champion and that he can do it if he stays healthy and avoids any injury.
#2 ECIII suffers a concussion
At NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn 4, ECIII faced Velveteen Dream in a singles match, which the latter won. Following the match, ECIII posted a very graphic picture of himself which showed that he had a bruised eye.
According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, ECIII is to get a main roster call-up soon and that his run in NXT is ending soon. Johnson also reported that ECIII suffered a concussion during the match against Dream.
#3 The Miz wants to bring back prestige to the WWE Championship
Before SummerSlam, The Miz spoke with Sky Sports in an interview where he said that the WWE Championship has lost its prestige and that he would bring “relevancy and prestige back” to the title.
The former Intercontinental champion, who beat Daniel Bryan at SummerSlam, said that he would challenge AJ Styles for the WWE Championship after defeating Bryan.
The Miz said, “I deserve to be in the WWE Championship match. So I said, ‘Listen, if I defeat Daniel Bryan, I deserve to be in that match.’ So, I’m hoping once I beat Daniel, I can face AJ, take that title, and bring the relevancy and prestige back to that title like I did with the Intercontinental [Championship].” (H/T WrestlingInc for transcription)
He said that Styles, sometimes, “coasts” through matches and that he would bring relevancy back to the WWE title.
#4 Finn Balor calls Roman Reigns “one of the greats”
Finn Balor, who squashed Baron Corbin at SummerSlam, spoke ahead of the PPV and made a bold statement, calling new Universal Champion Roman Reigns as “one of the greats”.
Balor said that he didn’t understand why fans boo Reigns and that he’s one of the hardest working people in the WWE.
In the interview with Sky Sports, Balor “I don’t get it. He’s probably one of the hardest working people in WWE, he looks great, he’s professional, a great talker and behind everything, a great person. He was great to me when I first came into WWE and he continues to help me today. I can’t speak of anything but greatness for Roman Reigns, he’s one of the all-time greats.” (H/T WrestlingInc for the transcription)
He said that fans booing Reigns is a result of a group of fans initiating the boos followed by the rest of the crowd joining in, but said that the Universal champion is not bothered by it.
#5 John Cena reacts to not being at SummerSlam
For the first time in 15 years, John Cena was not a part of SummerSlam as he is shooting for a new movie alongside Jackie Chan titled Project X.
Cena tweeted about missing SummerSlam, wishing the Superstars the best, and also revealing in a cryptic hashtag that he’s not done yet.
John Cena last wrestled against Triple H at the Greatest Royal Rumble in April and hasn’t been on WWE television yet.
#6 Matt Hardy’s new backstage role
It seems that Matt Hardy’s role as a wrestler in the WWE is up as he recently revealed the injuries that he has suffered after years of high-flying action.
Recent reports suggested that Hardy was given a backstage role as a producer and Hardy’s tweets at SummerSlam suggested the same.
Hardy, in his tweets, said that he’s working in a “different capacity”, and was then seen helping out backstage interviewer Mike Rome.
He also congratulated Roman Reigns on becoming Universal Champion and said that the Universal Championship “is no longer defunct”.
